Over the past 30 years, SteelMart has grown to $133 million in sales, 170 employees and 80,000,000 pounds of steel processed annually, 300,000 pounds processed daily, and 19,000 pounds processed hourly. While the numbers have changed, our commitment to people remains the secret to our success.
You have options for where you can get the steel you need. We know that. That’s why we focus on making the experience easy, convenient, and affordable.
The passion that ignited us to start SteelMart nearly 30 year ago still drives us today. And now our team of 130 dedicated employees feel it too.
Paul Carling begins setting aside and selling used and surplus steel while working in a metal scrapyard. He has no office, no warehouse, and no employees. But he has a dream.
Carling notices small- to medium-sized construction and fabrication companies had few options for obtaining the specific steel pieces they needed. Carling founds SteelMart to meet their needs.
Carling’s college roommate and closest friend, Brian Satisky, joins Paul at SteelMart. While Paul makes deliveries in a beat-up truck, Brian cuts steel with an old torch and loads customer orders with an even older forklift.
Paul and Brian hire their first employee to work in the yard so they can pursue new business. They have no investors or private equity, but they have an unmatched work ethic and a dream. They begin building a company culture with a laser focus on taking care of employees, customers, and vendors.
The first SteelMart facility opens in Norcross, GA. New employees and equipment serve a growing customer base.
Carling and Satisky open a second location in Gainesville, GA, but as the business continues to grow, it’s clear they need a bigger facility.

SteelMart is honored as one of Inc. Magazine’s 5000 fastest-growing private companies in the U.S. and one of the 500 fastest growing in the Southeast.
As the U.S. economy falters, the construction industry in Atlanta slows dramatically.
SteelMart outgrows its Doraville property and moves to a 60,000-square-foot state-of-the-art steel production center in Tucker, GA.
